The Great American Outdoors Act Passes the House

On July 22nd, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Great American Outdoors Act with bipartisan support. The Act ensures that our national parks, refuges, and forests are properly funded and America’s treasured lands are protected. The bill passed the Senate in June with a sweeping bipartisan vote. It now heads to the President’s desk for his signature, which is expected.

The GCA applauds every member of Congress who voted in favor of enacting this historic legislation. Their votes guarantee that the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) will be fully funded at the authorized level of $900 million annually. The Act also provides $9.5 billion for much needed infrastructure repairs at our national parks. In a time when Americans are finding solace in the outdoors, this legislation will go a long way towards ensuring that our natural resources are protected, and access to the outdoors will be available for all.

The GCA has been a significant force along the bill’s journey to passage. Read the GCA position papers on Clean Water and National Parks. The history books will most likely remember 2020 as the year of a global pandemic. But the people and organizations who worked so hard for this victory will remember 2020 as the year that ensured the future of our public lands for generations to come.
