Delivering the Christmas Spirit With Meals on Wheels

Who needs snow for Christmas? In Sarasota, Florida, it's in the 70’s, but Santa, his reindeer, and the Founders Garden Club have been busy with deliveries. For two decades, the Founders Garden Club of Sarasota has partnered with Meals on Wheels sharing the Christmas spirit by providing home-bound recipients with meal trays.

Every December, the Founders Garden Club gathers to assemble and decorate 300 miniature boxwood Christmas trees to be placed on Meals on Wheels trays and delivered during the holiday season. Club President Patty Sullivan states, "It is always a joyous time for us all and truly gets us in the spirit of Christmas.”

The trees are made with boxwood cuttings, from member’s gardens, along with red mini carnations and a holiday bow topper. The final touch is a tag, affixed with a bow, that says, “Holiday Greetings from Founders Garden Club of Sarasota.” Wrapped gifts of blankets, socks, and reusable bottles add to the magic of Christmas for each recipient.

In Sarasota, Monday through Saturday, Meals on Wheels delivers over 500 meals daily with the help of 450 volunteers. Recipients are typically isolated or living with disabilities and are unable to plan, shop, or prepare meals for themselves. With one in four seniors living alone and nearly 7.1 million living in poverty, this organization is needed now more than ever. This special December workshop embodies the spirit of Christmas in helping to make the season a little brighter for those less fortunate.
